Yoel Castillo Botello

Visiting Assistant Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures

Yoel Castillo Botello specializes in medieval and early modern Spanish literature, performance and book history. His current research focuses on the material culture of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Iberian songbooks, including publishing practices, reading networks, and cross-cultural intellectual engagements. His scholarly interests also include the uses of music as a source of social satire, political commentary and dissent in early modern Spanish drama as well as representations of gender, racial and religious differences in literature, theater and film. Professor Castillo Botello is passionate about language teaching and enjoys incorporating his research and performance background in class. Before coming to Bowdoin, Professor Castillo Botello taught Spanish and theater at Deerfield Academy and held visiting faculty positions at Wabash College and Grinnell College.
